Volunteer/Banner Desert Medical Center
Audio: “I like to help people and I like making a difference in somebody’s day. I wanted to volunteer at Banner Desert because not only is it close to my house but every time I’ve ever gone there for anything I’ve always had a good experience. And I always have had positive things at the hospital.
I picked the emergency department because it’s a busy place; there are always lots of things going on, there are lots of opportunities to help people. It’s a place that people don’t necessarily think of as having a good experience, so it’s a good chance for me to be able to impact their visit in a positive way.
During a normal shift in the emergency department, I help people get comfortable, bring them pillows, blankets, help their family members if they have any questions, help people find their way, help the nurses by stocking their supplies. I’m able to sit with patients and talk to them, when maybe people are too busy.
I do feel that volunteering has definitely helped prepared me for a nursing career. I’ve got to see lots of different scenarios and lots of different experiences. And I’ve learned – I learn a lot every time I’m there. I would definitely encourage someone to volunteer at a hospital, because it just gives you a good feeling of you’re always helping people when you’re there, not only the patients, but the staff and the nurses. And you’re definitely a support to them and every time you’re there it just gives you a positive feeling like you’ve impacted people’s day.”
