The Surgical Care Area at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital consists of seven state-of-the-art surgical operating suites, a Post-anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Special Procedures Unit and Sterile Processing department.
Registered nurses and other caregivers assigned to these units collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists and other health care professionals to provide the best surgical experience possible.
Here are our surgical care areas:
- Post-anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) – There are nine recovery bays in the PACU. Registered nurses with training in adult and pediatric advanced life support and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) work in conjunction with physicians and other health care professionals to ensure a safe and successful transition home or to an inpatient unit following surgery.

- Special Procedures Unit – The Special Procedures Unit provides various surgical, medical and diagnostic services including pain management, patient sedation and monitoring and more.

- Sterile Processing Department – The unit responsible for the proper and thorough maintenance, cleaning, and sterilization of all surgical instruments, equipment and supplies used in the operating room.
