The procedures Wound Care Clinic at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, offers specialty treatment of slow-healing wounds and ulcers that require repetitive care and observation. We specialize in the various types of wound care:
- Surgical wounds
- Open sores
After the initial consultation, our wound care team is in contact with your health care provider to develop an individualized treatment plan for care.
Open sores, ulcers and open wounds are common problems that may be caused by:
- Certain medications
- Inflammatory diseases
- Poor circulation (swelling in the legs or feet)
- Other medical problems
At the initial visit, patients are asked to provide a thorough medical history with emphasis on the wound. Our Certified Wound Care nurse conducts an examination, makes an assessment and develops a recommendation for wound management.
Treatment plans are designed to help relieve pain and speed up the healing process. Each treatment plan is based on the patient’s health and well being and ability to care for their wound. The individualized plan may include one or more of the following treatments:
- Compression application (stocking, Unna boot, ABI, etc.)
- Topical wound care therapies
- Wound hygiene
- Sharp debridement
- Prosthetics or orthotics to restore or enhance normal lifestyle function per physician order
- Diagnostic testing recommendations (Bone scan, MRI/MRA, TCOM, X-Ray, Wound culture, biopsy and/or labs)
Patients receive ongoing individualized instructions on caring for and speeding up the healing process of their wounds. This includes nutrition, fluid intake, prescribed medications, appropriate apparel and shoe wear, self wound care, hand washing and preventative measures that are appropriate to the patient’s lifestyle, ability to move and living conditions.
Our staff members participate in ongoing education to maintain the most up-to-date knowledge on current wound care practices.
