Nuclear Medicine

Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix's Nuclear Medicine department is one of the largest in the metro Phoenix area.

Our Nuclear Medicine physicians provide one-on-one consultation to all therapy patients prior to their procedure.

Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix Nuclear Medicine is also the only department that has a CLIA-certified RIA (radioimmunoassay) lab.

We are dedicated to patient safety and comfort. We can accommodate patients who weigh up to 500 pounds (even more for certain exams, please check with our staff).

Nuclear medicine uses very small and safe amounts of radioactive materials with a specialized camera to diagnose and treat disease.

Through diagnostic nuclear imaging using our Nuclear Medicine/CT scanners, we can see the human body at work. This is especially helpful when looking for blood clots, cancer, and for evaluating the function of the organs.

During an exam, we administer very small elements of a radioactive tracer by injection, inhalation or taken orally. These tracers leave the body very quickly and have no side effects. Imaging time varies, but generally ranges from 30 to three hours.

Physicians use nuclear medicine to best show bones or organs such as the heart, kidneys, liver, lungs, thyroid and many others while they are functioning within the body. Some common procedures include:

  • Heart scans
  • Bone scans and palliative Bone Metastasis therapy
  • Lung scans
  • Kidney scans
  • Liver/Gallbladder scans
  • Stomach/Bowel scans
  • Tumor/Abscess Localization scans including Zevalin treatment for Non-Hodgekin Lymphoma.
  • Thyroid Uptakes/Scans
  • Nuclear Medicine Thyroid Therapy
