Why would you need a pacemaker or defibrillator?
Pacemakers and defibrillators are used to treat irregular heartbeats. Whether your heart is beating too fast, as is the case with atrial fibrillation and tachycardia, or too slow as with a condition called bradycardia, a pacemaker or defibrillator can help restore an acceptable heart rhythm.
A pacemaker uses electrical impulses to regulate the beating of the heart. The pacemaker's primary purpose is to maintain an adequare heart rate, either because the natural heart rate is not fast enough or there is a block in the heart's electrical conduction system.
A defibrillator monitors the heartbeat. It gives out a high-energy electrical impulse to stop very fast and abormal heartbeats and returns the heart to a normal rhythm. It can be external (placed on a chest) or internal (surgically placed in the chest).
How is a pacemaker or defibrillator implanted?
In most cases, the pacemaker or defibrillator implantation takes place in the Cardiac Catherization Lab.
Patients who have the procedure are usually in the hospital for one or two days. Before the surgery, patients are given a sedative to help them relax. The doctor will numb the area.
The electrophysiologist makes a two to three-inch incision in the upper chest under the collarbone. Using a special monitor and injectable dye, the doctor guides the pacemaker’s leads through a large vein to the heart. Then the doctor connects the leads to the device and places it under the skin. The incision is closed and bandaged.
