Varicose Veins

The Cavanagh Heart Center's program for variclose veins can allow patients to get to activities they love like bike riding

The Cavanagh Heart Center at Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix is one of the few medical centers in the metro Phoenix area to offer endovenous ablation to remove varicose veins without scarring.

Whether you are seeking to have varicose veins treated because of cosmetic or medical reasons, Cavanagh Heart Center provides the newest and most effective treatments.

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins affect women more than men. Varicose veins can be caused by:

  • genetics
  • pregnancy
  • obesity
  • menopause
  • aging
  • prolonged standing
  • leg injury
  • abdominal straining

When a vein becomes varicose, it means that the valve in the vein which helps pump blood up to the heart has become damaged. You may notice that your leg feels achy, heavy or swollen or see a brownish-blue discoloration near the damaged vein. Sometimes you may feel leg cramps.

How does endovenous ablation cure them?

Endovenous ablation eliminates varicose veins by closing the non-working vein. It is a less-invasive alternative to traditional surgery or vein stripping. The patient remains awake during the procedure. An interventional radiologist or a vascular surgeon numbs the area of the leg being treated and inserts a catheter (long, thin tube) into the vein. A radiofrequency electrode is inserted through the catheter and works to close the damaged vein.

Typically patients feel relief from their symptoms immediately after endovenous ablation. The procedure leaves no scars and the veins become invisible shortly after the procedure.

What are the risks and side effects of vein ablation?

There is a minimal chance of infection at the incision site and some people experience bruising or bleeding in that area as well. The procedure is less invasive than typical vein stripping and allows patients to feel immediate pain relief.
