Vagus Nerve Stimulator

Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix offers Vagus Nerve Stimulator (VNS) therapy as an option for some patients with epilepsy.  VNS therapy is discussed with patients when medications fail to stop seizures.

The therapy is designed to prevent seizures by sending regular small pulses of electrical energy to the brain via the vagus nerve. The implantation of a VNS requires an outpatient surgical procedure.

Once a patient has been screened and is an approved candidate for VNS, a referral for a neurosurgical consult is sent to the Neurosurgery department. The surgical procedure is scheduled through the neurosurgeon’s office and is often scheduled as an outpatient procedure.

VNS surgeries are performed at Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix

After the patient is discharged from the hospital, the patient is referred back to the referring neurologist for VNS programming. VNS programming services are also available in the Neuroscience Clinic.
