The goal of the Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix Vascular and Limb Salvage program is to save lives and limbs.
Arterial Ischemia (lack of blood flow in the arteries) and Diabetic Feet - Facts and Figures:
- Ten million Americans suffer from peripheral vascular disease (PAD). This figure is expected to rise quickly with the aging of the huge baby boomer population. PAD is frequently under-recognized, especially among women, until it is limb- threatening. Between 12 and 20 percent of Americans have PAD, but only one-third have any symptoms.
- Diabetes affects more than 20 million Americans (250 million worldwide). More than 25 percent of people with diabetes will develop a foot ulcer, which can lead to amputation if not treated properly.
- After a major amputation, 50 percent of patients lose their second limb within two years and the relative five-year mortality rate is 68 percent.
- Peripheral Artery Disease and diabetes together can quickly threaten life and limb.
