Physical Therapy
(Applicable to both knee and hip replacement patients)
Physical therapy will progress as you are able to do more each day and your doctor orders increased activity. Your physical therapist will teach you exercises that you can and should perform while in bed. Doing these exercises is very important to your recovery. Your physical therapist will teach you the proper way to perform these exercises and how often during the day you should do them.
You will be taught the proper way to get yourself out of bed and how to transfer yourself to a chair. Your physical therapist will teach you how much weight you may put on your surgical leg and will teach you how to use a walker and/or crutches. Your physical therapist will help you begin walking again. Initially, you will take a few steps in your room and then progress to walking longer distances in the hall.
Gradually, the type and duration of your therapy increase so you can become stronger and more independent each day. Your physical therapist will share your progress with your team of caregivers.
