The Simulation Lab
With computerized mannequins, the Banner Baywood Sim Lab was created to answer the need for more nursing and clinical education in the Phoenix metropolitan area. It is part of a Banner Health systemwide initiative to provide simulation education to all of our healthcare professionals.
Filling the need
Health care technology has become incredibly complex, with developments such as robotic surgery and electronic medical charting. Also, hospitals are seeing more medically complex patients than in prior years. The result is a need for increasing on-the-job training.
Banner Baywood is meeting this need with its new simulation lab.
The Banner Baywood Sim Lab:
-
Serves 15 to 20 students at a time
-
Features audio/video equipment for videos
or PowerPoint presentations
-
Has one bed and one gurney, two adult-sized mannequins and a nurse’s station with four computers
Using high-tech mannequins, clinicians can practice procedures, look after a “patient,” and even chart progress electronically.
New staff
The Sim Lab allows new staff at Banner Baywood Medical Center and Banner Heart Hospital to engage in hands-on practice to learn the skills they need before using them in real-life situations.
Current staff
The Sim Lab offers different case scenarios to teach current staff new skills or allow them to approach a situation from a new perspective.
The mannequins
The Sim Lab currently has two mannequins: Frank N. Stein and Charlie Brown.
These “patients” feature a variety of programs and functions:
-
palpable pulses
-
heart attacks
-
17 cardiac rhythms
-
heart and lung sounds
-
blood pressure
