Medicare has expanded Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy coverage to include the treatment of diabetic wounds of the lower legs. There are strict criteria that need to be met to be able to qualify for this coverage:

  • Patients need to have a wound on the lower extremities that has been caused by either Type I or Type II diabetes.
  • The size and depth of the wound need to meet certain criteria which is determined by the referring physician or the Banner Boswell Medical Center -- Wound Center.
  • Patients need to receive 30 days of standard wound care as the first step to healing. If the wound has not shown any improvement in 30 days, the patient may be eligible for coverage under the new Medicare guidelines for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.
