Pet/CT machine comes to Banner Desert

MESA, Ariz. (Feb. 21, 2008) -- Banner Desert Medical Center is now offering the newest molecular imaging technology of combined PET/CT imaging for both adult and pediatric outpatients.

PET (Positron Emission Tomography) and CT (Computerized Tomography) are separate imaging studies used by physicians to locate disease in the body. The CT scan provides information on the size, shape and location of the body’s anatomy; while the PET scan measures the body’s metabolic function within the cells, often before anatomic changes even take place.

By combining these two scanning technologies, a PET/CT scan enables doctors to more accurately diagnose and identify cancer, heart disease and brain disorders.  In a single scan, doctors can diagnose and determine the extent of disease, prescribe treatment, and track progress.

“The combined PET/CT has emerged as the most accurate diagnostic study in the fight against cancer,” said David Price, Service Line Administrator for Oncology. “This is a wonderful addition to our cancer program.”

Thomas Taylor, MD, a radiation oncologist with Banner Desert, agrees that the addition of the PET/CT will benefit many patients.

“I order PET/CT scans frequently because they are an excellent option for my patients,” said Dr. Taylor. “This technology is a tremendous asset for the hospital and I believe it should be used more frequently on patients.”

Physicians who refer patients to Banner Desert for the PET/CT scan can request special patient brochures from Kirk McFalls, Manger of Business Development, at (480) 272-5595. The brochures, designed specifically for testing patients, provide detailed information on what the PET/CT scan is looking for, what will be required of the patient prior to and during the exam and direct them to the referring physician for patient outcomes.

The PET/CT scan is available Wednesdays and Fridays. To make an appointment for a test or scan, please contact: Central Scheduling at (602) 640-3131 or by fax at (602) 640-3151.

For more information about the new PET/CT scans, please contact the Nuclear Medicine Department at (480) 412-3790.
