Banner Estrella Medical Center ensures that every possible step is being taken so patients receive the best and safest care possible.
Take an active role by understanding the condition, the treatment options available, what to expect during treatment, and what can be done to help in recovery.
Ask Questions
- The physician, nurse, pharmacist, benefits plan coordinator or any health care provider should be prepared and eager to answer any questions or to talk about all treatment options. If necessary, seek a second opinion.
- Research illnesses or conditions. At Banner Estrella, multiple educational tools are at a patient's fingertips, including informational videos right on their patient room television. Patients can also request more information from the physicians or their care givers.
While in the Hospital
- Confirm the name on all admitting information and the ID bracelet. The Banner Estrella staff uses bracelet information for all treatment, medication dispensing and care directives.
- Please do not tamper with devices, including IV pumps. If there are questions, ask a nurse.
- Patients should wash their hands often and remind others to do so to best help prevent infections.
- For safety, our pharmacy will provide all prescription medications in the hospital. Personal medications should be noted at admitting but actual pills will come from the in-house pharmacy. Tell a nurse if it is necessary to use medications from home for any reason. Banner Estrella will work with the patient and physician to make sure all medications are administered safely.
- Finally, if something just doesn't feel right or safe, or if you feel worried, tell your doctor or nurse right away.
Involve a Family Member or Friend in Your Care
Banner Estrella Medical Center believes it is important for patients to have a family member or friend who can help during recovery and be there as a support for the patient. Ask about the
Partner in Caring program or download the Partner in Caring brochure - in
English or in
Spanish - to learn more.
Work with Your Physician and Other Care Providers
- Write down all medical history and conditions or illnesses including immunizations, allergies, time spent in a hospital, all the medications (including over-the-counter drugs), vitamins, supplements and herbs.
- Share up-to-date information about health history and care with all care givers.
- Ask questions. Write down questions so as not to forget. Take notes to help understand any care instructions.
- Pay attention. If something doesn't seem correct, tell the physician or care provider.
- If there are any questions or concerns about safety, tell a nurse, physician or therapist.
- Write down the names and phone numbers of all physicians, clinics and pharmacies for quick and easy reference.
