Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center opens
By Edgardo Rivera, MD, Medical Director of Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center
On Sept. 26, Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center opened its doors and began to provide an unprecedented level of cancer care to our community. This opening marks a significant milestone in the history of cancer care in Arizona. We had 24 appointments the first day, including the first patient, Peter S. Fine, president & CEO of Banner Health. Fine has shared publicly his battle with cancer and his treatment at MD Anderson. The opening of Banner MD Anderson allows Arizona cancer patients like Fine the opportunity to receive this level of cancer care closer to home.
I am excited to announce that we have officially received approval from Banner’s Board of Directors to move forward with the design for Phase 2 of the cancer center. This phase will include:
- An eight-story patient tower dedicated to cancer care.
- Phase 2 of the cancer center that will add about 95,000 square feet and allow for the expansion of programs.
- A parking garage.
- And some renovations within Banner Gateway
This next phase will allow Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center to grow and provide hope to more cancer patients while allowing Banner Gateway’s focus to return to being a community hospital. Our goal is to have this next phase complete by early 2014, pending further Board approval.
