For Physicians at Banner Gateway Medical Center

Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center’s opening day just around the corner

By Chris Price, MD, Chief of Staff

In just over a month, Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center will open and begin to provide an unprecedented level of care to cancer patients. It is hard to believe that this amazing cancer center is almost a reality. Patients will receive care in the new 133,000-square-foot outpatient center as well as two inpatient floors within Banner Gateway Medical Center.

Banner Health is indeed fortunate to be able to team up with a highly regarded health care provider like The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. For more than  70 years, they have had a very powerful mission and commitment to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research, prevention and education. Their international leadership in clinical practice and research has led to new treatments standards worldwide.

I know most of you are familiar with many of the details about Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center, but I thought I would take a moment to explain multidisciplinary care, one of the most distinctive features of the new cancer center. Once a patient arrives at the cancer center, a team of physicians and clinical support staff will see the patient in one location, which reduces the need to travel to multiple facilities and also ensures the integration of specialists. This multidisciplinary care team develops a plan of care with the patient and works together to implement the plan. Patients will also have a clinical nurse navigator who really acts as a liaison between the patient and medical team from the first appointment through the last. It is this comprehensive, integrated and compassionate feature that sets us above the rest.

Referring a patient to Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center will be easy! You will just need to call (480) 256-3433. If you refer a patient, you will be kept in the loop about your patient’s treatment plan as well as be invited to attend multi-disciplinary conferences regarding your referred patients as scheduled and other relevant educational opportunities. Physicians practicing at the Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center will work directly with leading oncologists at MD Anderson in Houston, and will have access to the same protocols and practice standards.

With the opening just around the corner, there are several events that you are invited to attend. We hope that you will come and take a tour of the building and meet some of the physician leadership if you have not yet gotten the privilege to do so.
