Banner physicians recognized by American College of Physicians
The American College of Physicians (ACP) awarded John Hensing MD, FACP, with the 2011 Arizona Chapter Laureate Award and named Richard Gerkin MD 2011 Arizona Chapter Researcher of the Year.
The Laureate Award honors a 15 to 20-year Fellow or Master of ACP who has demonstrated by example and conduct an abiding commitment to excellence in medical care, education, research, service to their community and the ACP. A nominee is a senior physician with a long history of excellence and peer approval in internal medicine and served the chapter and community with distinction in some clearly definable manner.
Dr. Hensing is the executive vice president and chief medical officer at Banner. He has directed the development of the Care Management Council that has a proven record for quality improvement for all the CMS quality indicators at Banner Health. He has directed the development of unique quality projects as eICU, Telemedicine and the Banner Simulation Center.
The Researcher of the Year Award is given to an ACP Arizona Member, Fellow or Master who has devoted at least half of his/her professional career to clinical and/or basic research. The Award recognizes a body of work that may include research publication in the medical literature and/or significant contributions to the body of scientific knowledge.
Dr. Gerkin is a board certified physician at Banner Good Samaritan specializing in toxicology. He has published more than 140 abstracts, articles, letters and chapters and mentored hundreds of trainees. He teaches statistics and evidence-based medicine and has been a leader in the expansion of the Associates’ poster program at the ACP Arizona Chapter meeting and in the Phoenix citywide Academic Excellence day.
