Internal Medicine Section Chief named for Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center
David Edwards, MD, has been named Internal Medicine Section Chief at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center, scheduled to open Sept. 26, 2011, on the Banner Gateway Medical Center Campus in Gilbert, Ariz.
“Dr. Edwards will be responsible for the section of medicine at the cancer center,” said Edgardo Rivera, MD, medical director for Banner MD Anderson. “He has been performing this role on an interim basis and has contributed greatly to our planning for utilization management and quality reporting.”
Dr. Edwards will serve as both the internal medicine section chief for Banner MD Anderson and continue his role as the chief medical officer for Banner Gateway Medical Center.
Since March 2009, Dr. Edwards has served as the chief medical officer at Banner Gateway Medical Center where his responsibilities include patient safety and the hospitalist team. Prior to this position, he was the medical director/chief medical officer at Banner Desert Medical Center in Mesa for five years. Dr. Edwards worked for ten years at CIGNA Healthplan in a variety of leadership roles including associate medical director for specialty care and the department head for adult medicine.
Dr. Edwards received his medical degree at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and a Master of Science degree in information technology at Western International University in Phoenix. He completed his internal medicine internship at Maricopa Medical Center and his residency in internal medicine at University Medical Center in Tucson. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
