iCare goes live on the Progressive Care Unit
iCare, the state-of-the-art patient monitoring system that is currently in our ICU and medical surgical floors, is now being used with patients in our Progressive Care Unit. Banner Gateway is the first facility in the nation to have this technology in a Progressive Care Unit, just like we were for the iCare medical surgical units.
iCare is an innovative technology that serves as an additional resource for unit nurses and provides an extra set of eyes to monitor patients. iCare staff can communicate directly with patients via a two-way audio-video system. The cameras and monitors that are located in each patient room allow iCare staff to talk with patients and caregivers in each room, monitor patient conditions and provide assistance to unit staff as needed.
iCare Progressive Care is a little different from iCare Medical Surgical. The iCare Progressive Care nurses are specifically trained in ICU and PCU care which allows them to serve as a partner as well as a resource to the staff on the floor. The monitor techs on PCU will continue to monitor the continuous ECG for the patient, however the iCare Progressive Care Staff will also be monitoring the patient to ensure they are not trending.
The iCare Progressive Care staff will also be able to assist the PCU staff with second nurse verification, identify consults, convey critical labs, identify trend in vital signs, follow up on discharge instructions, assist in hourly rounding and more. Adding this technology to PCU will allow us to continue to improve patient outcomes and safety as well continue to lead the efforts in innovation.
