Support Groups

 

Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center is dedicated to our patients making a full recovery. Here are the support groups we offer: 


Cancer

Esophageal Cancer Learn and Support Group
This monthly group is for those diagnosed with esophageal cancer to find support and learn from one another. Sharing your experiences with others who have had similar experiences can reduce stress and anxiety. Discuss aspects of living with esophageal cancer, treatments, side effect management and survivorship. Open to family and friends.

  • Cost: Free
  • When: Once a month on Thursday 
  • Where: Sandstone Conference Room. Enter through Banner Good Samaritan's main entrance at 1111 E. McDowell Road, Phoenix. You may valet park at the main entrance or park in the parking garage. We will validate your valet/parking ticket so parking is free for you.

Triple Negative Breast Cancer Learn and Support Group
This monthly group is for those facing Triple Negative Breast Cancer to find support and learn from one another. Discuss aspects of living with cancer, treatments, side-effects management and survivorship. Open to family and friends. 

  • Cost: Free
  • When: 6 to 7:30 p.m., Fourth Wednesday of every month   
  • Where: Laura Dreier Breast Center (use 12th Street entrance). The Breast Center faces 12th Street and is north of the main entrance at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center: 1111 E. McDowell Road, Phoenix. There is valet parking at this entrance as well as the main entrance. You may valet park or park in the parking garage. We will validate your valet/parking ticket so parking is free for you.

Cooking for Health (cancer-related nutrition)
Chef Madelyn Pryor covers cancer-related nutrition topics. This cooking demonstration and tasting features vegan menus loaded with antioxidants, phytochemicals, high fiber, low fat and healthy dairy alternatives. Recipes included.

  • Cost: Free
  • When: 6 to 7:30 p.m., Fourth Monday of each month   
  • Where: Prenatal Classroom. This is located in the Ancillary Building, 3rd floor and off the blue elevators in the main lobby just to the left of the main entrance. You may valet park at the main entrance or park in the parking garage. We will validate your valet/parking ticket so parking is free for you.

Grief

Grief Support Group
The Grief Recovery® Outreach Programs are 12-week educational programs guiding participants in the return to a full life. The recovery process can enable one to achieve a sense of meaning and joy even though life is different. Grief Recovery® Specialists lead these programs.

Orthopedics

Joint Replacement Education
Patients receiving a total knee or hip replacement are encouraged to attend our free joint replacement class. Trained orthopedic nurses from our inpatient unit teach this class, as well as our inpatient physical and occupational therapists.

Stroke

Connect with others dealing with stroke-related issues. Open to patients, family and caregivers. Join us for this free monthly CARF-certified support group meeting and know that you are not alone! Reservations not required.

  • Cost: Free
  • When: Starting February 2015. Watch this space for further details. 
  • Where: Banner Good Samaritan Rehabilitation Institute at 1012 E. Willetta - 2nd floor Main Gym
  • Parking: Directly in front of the Rehab Institute

Transplant Patients

Liver Transplant Support Group
A support group for liver transplant patients and caregivers is available on a regular basis, hosted by the Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center Transplant Center.

  • Cost: Free
  • When: First Tuesday of each month from 6:30 to 8 p.m.   
    Where: Sandstone North Conference Room (next to the gift shop in the main lobby) 
  • Parking: Visitor parking garage near the entrance. Parking will be validated

Vestibular Support Group
Vestibular disorders are associated with the parts of the inner ear and brain that process sensory information involved with controlling balance and eye movements. Patients who experience vestibular issues are encouraged to attend our free Vestibular Support Group. Reservations not required.

  • Cost: Free
  • When: Group meets quarterly on the third Thursday of the month from
    noon to 1 p.m.
  • Where: Banner Good Samaritan Rehabilitation Institute at 1012 E. Willetta - 2nd floor in Conference Room B.
