PHOENIX (Dec. 31, 2007) – Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center surpassed its previous record total of solid organ transplant procedures in 2007.
A new approach to hip replacement surgery gets patients on their feet sooner
PHOENIX (Dec. 17, 2007) – You may have heard about orthopedic patients in traction for days or weeks during recovery from surgery, but now traction during some hip replacement procedures is allowing for faster recoveries. Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center recently obtained the PROfx Hip Arthroplasty table – a surgical table designed exclusively for hip joint surgery, including total joint replacement, acetabular fractures and orthopedic pelvic reconstruction procedures. The table allows surgeons to position a patient’s hip and leg in traction for easier access, including an anterior approach (from the front of the hip) as opposed to the lateral (side), or the posterior (back) approach.

Banner nurses honored
SCOTTSDALE (Nov. 17) – Four Banner Health nurses have been honored by the March of Dimes as ”Nurses of the Year’’ for their outstanding work and contributions to the nursing profession and their community. Examples of their compassion and expertise include giving an elderly patient a ride to the courthouse, making staff meetings fun, encouraging new nurses and braving military combat.
Laura Dreier Breast Center offers state-of-the-art digital mammography
PHOENIX (October 1, 2007) – The Laura Dreier Breast Center at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center recently installed a new digital mammography system, allowing higher quality images for diagnosis of breast cancer. The new Senographe® DS full-field digital mammography system from GE Healthcare is the most modern mammography equipment available to patients today.

PHOENIX (Sept. 17, 2007) – Since 1963, the majority of patients that come to Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center have spent some time with the hospital’s rehabilitation therapists who help to speed the recovery process. To meet the Valley’s need for specialized rehabilitative care, the 63-bed Banner Good Samaritan Rehabilitation Institute (BGSRI) was built in 1967 to provide medical and therapeutic services to patients at all stages of their recoveries.
Banner Health’s Simulation Education and Training Center celebrates its first year
PHOENIX (Sept. 1, 2007) – Banner Health’s 5,000-square-foot Simulation Education and Training Center (SimET Center) at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center opened its doors to physicians, nurses, residents, ancillary staff and community first responders more than one year ago on Sept. 1.

Malone quadruplets born at Banner Good Samaritan
PHOENIX (Aug. 20, 2007) – Georgia is on the mind at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center after the delivery of quadruplets from Columbus, Ga., this morning. The babies were born between 10:01 a.m. and 10:04 a.m. to Kelly Malone and husband, Dr. Thomas Michael Malone, following a 34-week pregnancy. The Malones are the third family from Georgia to deliver quadruplets at Banner Good Samaritan since 2005.

PHOENIX (July 13, 2007) – For an eighth year, U.S.News & World Report magazine has recognized Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in the magazine’s annual “America’s Best Hospitals” issue. The Best Hospitals Report will appear in the July 23 edition. Banner Good Samaritan was recognized for four primary clinical programs – Heart & Heart Surgery (#27), Kidney Disease (#40), Gynecology (#41), and Urology (#45). This represents more U.S. News rankings than the hospital has ever received previously, and more rankings than any other hospital in Phoenix.
Alan I. Leibowitz, M.D., named Chief Academic Officer for Banner Health in Arizona
PHOENIX (July 9, 2007) – Alan I. Leibowitz, M.D., who has served as director of Internal Medicine Programs for Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center’s Medical Education department since 1989, has been named Chief Academic Officer (CAO) for Banner Health in Arizona and Designated Institutional Officer for Banner Good Samaritan by Susan Edwards, President of Banner Health’s Arizona region.
Banner Good Samaritan conducts milestone 300th liver transplant
PHOENIX (July 2, 2007) – On Thursday, June 28, transplant surgeons Jeff Brink, M.D.; James Cashman, M.D.; and Lawrence Koep, M.D.; performed the 300th liver transplant at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center, Arizona’s leading provider of organ transplant services.
Banner Health names CEO for Banner Good Samaritan
PHOENIX (June 25, 2007) – Late last week Susan Edwards, president of Banner Health’s Arizona Region, announced the appointment of Larry Volkmar as the new chief executive officer for Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix. He takes the helm at one of the largest hospitals in the state on Monday, July 16.
Masche sextuplets arrive
PHOENIX (June 11, 2007) – Jenny and Bryan Masche, of Lake Havasu, Ariz., are pleased to announce the arrival of their six children. The sextuplets were delivered by cesarean section today beginning at 8:21 a.m. by Dr. John Elliott, fellow Dr. Julie Scott, and resident physician Dr. Cara Christ. The Masche babies are Arizona’s first surviving sextuplet birth.
A family to meet their hero for the first time
PHOENIX (May 16, 2007) – Justin Cude’s mother gave him life 17 years ago, but it was a young woman he has never met who renewed that life when he was only 14. Justin was being treated for Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) at the City of Hope-Banner Bone Marrow Transplant Program, and he desperately needed a hero in the form of a compatible bone marrow donor. His hero, championed by the entire Cude family and our community, was Ina Sondershaus.

Banner Good Samaritan designated as National Neuropathy Center
PHOENIX (April 30, 2007) – The Peripheral Neuropathy Clinic at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center, part of the hospital’s Comprehensive NeuroServices Program (CNSP), has been given designation as a National Neuropathy Center by The Neuropathy Association, a public, charitable, nonprofit organization established in 1995. Banner Good Samaritan now becomes one of five such centers located across the U.S. at major medical institutions.

Air Force, ENMU say thanks to Banner
PHOENIX/MESA (April 6, 2007) – When the U.S. Air Force needs new Pararescue paramedic personnel, it sends its troops to local universities. At Kirtland Air Force Base near Roswell, N.M., the troops attend Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell's Pararescue/Combat Rescue Officer School, but they receive valuable field training at Banner Health hospitals.
Children and Household Chemicals are Focus of National Poison Prevention Week
PHOENIX (March 5, 2007) – Each year in Maricopa County more than 11,000 children under the age of five are poisoned. Most child poisonings occur in the home and are not serious, although there are instances when a poisoning is very serious and can result in medical complications and even death. Educating families about the basics of poison prevention, and what to do if a poisoning does take place, can help save young lives. The Banner Poison Control Center located at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center encourages Arizonans to become educated about harmful products and their effects during National Poison Prevention Week, March 19-25.
BGS allergist helps develop guidelines for chronic sinusitis treatment
PHOENIX (January 30, 2007) – Mark Schubert, M.D., Ph.D., an allergist at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center and clinical associate professor of medicine at the University of Arizona, is one of 25 national and international medical scientists who contributed to developing new clinical trials guidelines. The guidelines, “Rhinosinusitis: Developing Guidance for Clinical Trials,” were published in the November 2006 supplement of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology’s Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology and also in the November 2006 supplement to Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery.
Dr. Streitwieser named BGSMC Chief of Staff
PHOENIX (January 25, 2007) – David R. Streitwieser, M.D., FACEP, medical co-director of the Emergency department at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center, has been elected to a two-year term as Chief of Staff of Banner Good Samaritan. The appointment took effect Jan. 1, 2007.
Firefighters receive training at Banner SimET Center
