Banner Good Samaritan finishes expansion work; new maternity, cardiology and outpatient areas open

PHOENIX (Sept. 14, 2004) – It officially began on Nov.1, 2001, when Banner Good Samaritan leaders broke ground on a $90-million expansion and renovation project designed to change the face of health care at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center. The expansion and renovation project was a combined team effort between Banner Good Samaritan, OWP/P Architects, Inc., and DPR Construction, Inc.

From that first symbolic turning of the soil to today’s resulting harvest proves the old adage that you “Reap what you sow.” The monumental effort that went into expanding and renovating Banner Good Samaritan has sown physical structures that blend form and function and that live up to the project’s mission statement: “To create the place to heal and be healed.”

Less than three years later, patients, visitors and the community have a medical center that lives up to both the project’s and Banner Health’s mission: “We exist to make a difference in people’s lives through excellent patient care.”

The construction project consolidated several formerly dispersed patient care areas and made them easily accessible from either the Del & Jewell Lewis Lobby or from the five-story parking garage, one of the first completed projects during this renovation.

First Floor
The first floor is now home to Patient Registration, Outpatient Treatment Center, Endoscopy and Medical Imaging. The new Patient Registration area has helped streamline the admitting process at Banner Good Samaritan. It brings registration for inpatients and for the majority of outpatients into one common area, complemented by the nearby parking garage, several outdoor gardens, and comfortable waiting areas.

The new Outpatient Treatment Center (formerly called the Ambulatory Care Center) was designed with patient and visitor comfort in mind. It features 26 private treatment areas, a 15-bay Infusion Room, a spacious outpatient lab, and, for the first time, a dedicated discharge area for outpatients who are ready to go home. OTC staff provide pre-procedure and post-procedure care for patients going to or coming from the Cath Lab, Medical Imaging, Ultrasound, CT, MRI, Lithotripsy and Endoscopy. They also prepare patients for specialized surgeries.

The Medical Imaging Department is housed in a new area on the 1st Floor adjacent to the Ancillary Building. It has 29 imaging rooms including diagnostic fluoroscopy, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, computerized tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and special procedures rooms. Inpatients and outpatients are brought to the department through seperate entrances adding to greater patient privacy.

The first floor renovation is also home to several visitor amenities including four gardens, an expanded gift shop, a community conference center, Miss Lulu’s Café serving coffee and sandwiches, and the Grace Middlebrook Patient and Family Learning Center – an information center that provides a comfortable place for patients and families to learn about their health through lay-friendly journals, magazines and books, as well as through Internet-connected computers.

Second Floor
The second floor is home to the Harry J. Cavanagh Cardiology Center, named in honor of a distinguished civic leader and compassionate benefactor who has made a difference in improving the quality of life for so many of our community's less fortunate residents.

The Cavanagh Cardiology Center consolidates the cardiac catheterization labs, non-invasive cardiology and cardiac rehabilitation into one area served by a common waiting area. Patients and visitors can easily access the center through the 2nd floor of the parking garage.

Cardiac Catheterization Labs - The Cavanagh Cardiology Center contains six spacious state-of-the-art cath labs including one dual-purpose lab that can be used for cardiac caths as well as diagnostic or interventional electrophysiology studies. Four of the labs are equipped with the latest in flat-plate technology that enables true digital acquisition. Two of those labs feature larger flat plates that make it easier to perform peripheral vascular interventions. The area includes a dedicated 16-bed holding area.

Catheterization involves placing a catheter tube into the arteries to treat numerous heart conditions. Cardiologists at Banner Good Samaritan routinely perform diagnostic angiography procedures in order to obtain accurate images of the heart and blood vessels. They also perform an array of highly specialized procedures designed to remove blockages in the arteries and to keep them open.

Non-invasive Cardiology - Physicians in the Cavanagh Cardiology Center have a number of tools to help them diagnose the source of heart ailments and the best method of treatment, including echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, treadmill stress testing, nuclear stress testing, Holter monitors, event recording and electrocardiography.

Cardiac Rehab - Having a heart attack or heart surgery need not limit your enjoyment of life. The cardiac rehabilitation program at Banner Good Samaritan can help patients return to a productive, active and satisfying lifestyle. Our team of rehabilitation professionals offers a medically supervised program designed to meet the patient's personal needs.

The cardiac rehab team consists of the doctor, cardiac rehab nurses, exercise specialists, dietitians and other health care professionals. The patient and family are the most important members of the rehab team. The personal goals identified by the patient and the health care team can help reduce symptoms and the chance of having more heart problems.

Third Floor
In January 2004, Banner Good Samaritan gave birth to its new Maternity Center, the first clinical area to open in the hospital’s new Ancillary Building. The Maternity Center speaks convenience, comfort and beauty. The Center’s design reflects clinical excellence in an inviting environment.

The Maternity Center features a dedicated registration and admitting area, 14 OB triage exam rooms, an emergency delivery room, a comfortable waiting area adjacent to the Labor and Delivery floors, a Baby Boutique gift cart in the waiting area, and a spacious new OB education classroom and outdoor patio

Over the past decade, more Arizona families chose to deliver their babies at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center than any other center in the state, enhancing the hospital’s reputation as one of the nation’s most respected birthing centers. As a Level III Perinatal Center, Banner Good Samaritan is nationally recognized for its care of high-risk mothers, especially mothers delivering triplets or more.

Banner Good Samaritan is Arizona’s largest and busiest medical center. Located in downtown Phoenix, Banner Good Samaritan has been providing medical care since 1911. Today, more than 1,600 physicians representing more than 50 specialties work with Banner Good Samaritan’s staff to provide care to more than 36,000 inpatients a year.
