Banner Good Samaritan opens Movement Disorders Center

PHOENIX (June 15, 2004) – A Movement Disorders Center at Banner Good Samaritan Rehabilitation Institute now has a dedicated, patient care area on the first floor of the Rehabilitation building, which is located on the Banner Good Samaritan campus. The Center treats patients with movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, Essential Tremor disease and less common disorders such as spasticity and stiff person syndrome.

“We provide movement disorders patients with a multi-disciplinary team approach to improve their quality of life,” says Padma R. Mahant, MD, director of the Movement Disorders Center. Dr. Mahant is a neurologist who specializes in movement disorders. Team members include neurosurgeons, neurologists, neuro-psychologists, pharmacists and therapists.

Movement disorders are among the leading causes of neurological disability in the United States, particularly among the elderly. Parkinson’s disease can cause tremors, rigid muscles and difficulty in initiating movement. Essential Tremor is an inherited condition that can cause tremors that are so severe they prevent routine daily activities.

“Our goal is to provide patients, their caretakers and their physicians with the information and resources to live well with the disease by optimizing the medical, surgical and therapeutic interventions,” said Dr. Mahant.

The Movement Disorders Center is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., on the first floor of the Banner Good Samaritan Rehabilitation Institute. For more information, call (602) 239-6533.
