Bone marrow transplants give many cancer patients a second chance at life. Since 1996, the City of Hope-Banner Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Program has been giving Arizonans that second chance.
The City of Hope-Banner maintains the only major BMT research and treatment facility in the greater Phoenix area through a unique partnership between Banner Health and City of Hope in Los Angeles, one of the most advanced cancer research and treatment centers in the world.
BMT is a highly-specialized procedure used in the treatment of many cancers and chronic blood diseases including acute and chronic leukemia, Hodgkin’s disease, malignant lymphomas, multiple myeloma, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, testicular cancer, aplastic anemia and myelodysplasia.
An advanced procedure, BMT entails the use of high doses of chemotherapy and/or radiation to eliminate cancer cells. As a result of the intense treatment, the patient’s bone marrow is irreversibly damaged and a new source of those cells must be provided. Replacement cells may come from either the patient or a donor – related or unrelated.
