Family Medicine Center

 

Each year since 1995, Phoenix Magazine has published a list of “Top Docs” in the Valley. Each year, the Family Medicine list has been dominated by physician faculty members of the Banner Good Samaritan Family Medicine Center (formerly Family Practice Center) and the graduates of that family medicine residency who now work all over the Phoenix area.

 

“We take great pride in the excellent patient care patients receive from residents and faculty in the Family Medicine Center,” says Jeff Wolfrey, MD, the program director of the Center. “Numerous studies show that patients can receive better care from physicians at a teaching hospital than from hospitals that do not have such programs in place…this is because a teaching environment ensures that physicians are current in the latest medical information.”

 

The Family Medicine Center is one of the busiest primary care offices in Phoenix. Yet, because of a unique appointment program called Open Access, patients often can see a physician the same day of calling, or within a few days.

 

Faculty members consist of board-certified family physicians, a psychologist, and a nurse practitioner. There are also on-site social services. Faculty works closely with the residents throughout the three years of training. Family medicine provides excellent care for a wide range of patients, including children, pregnant women, older adults, and preventive care for men and women as well as chronic disease management. The practice has recently started  Group Visits, sessions in which physicians and staff meet with a group of patients their strategies to manage chronic health issues. The faculty includes physicians who have undergone special training in geriatrics, dermatology, and obstetrics. The office features 22 exam rooms, with specialty areas for colposcopy, minor surgery, casting, and counseling.

 

The office is located in the Edwards Medical Plaza on 12th Street, just south of Banner Good Samaritan. This is especially convenient for any patient who may need hospital services, such as admission or diagnostic testing. Close proximity to the hospital’s Laura Dreier Breast Center is another advantage.

 

As part of a learning environment, family medicine resident physicians are able to spend extra time with patients, performing comprehensive evaluations. Residents confer with faculty physicians who are always in attendance for patient cases and care.
