Social Work

woman with other adults

The Masters' degree-prepared Social Worker (MSW) is part of the clinic team because symptoms and diagnoses are more than physical.

Complex neurological diagnoses bring up distressing feelings such as:

  • anxiety and depression
  • changes in daily routine and finances
  • altered plans for the future
  • need for support and resources.

Everything affects not just the patient, but also the family. Because every person is unique, the social worker begins by assessing the individual situation and coping skills, taking into account the concerns of the patient and family along with the realities of the patient’s medical condition, finances, support system and living situation.

The social worker provides crisis counseling when needed and refers to professionals and agencies in the community.  As the needs of patient and family change, the social worker continues to be a link to community resources, long term planning and support in the clinic and via email or phone in between clinic visits.
