Driving can be a large part of independent living. Banner Good Samaritan's Occupational Therapy Department offers its Adapted Driving Program to people with disabilities who want to drive.

Who is eligible?

Our clients have a variety of disabilities and conditions including:

  • Head injury
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Stroke
  • Amputation
  • Arthritis
  • Neurological problems
  • Learning disability
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Dwarfism
  • Geriatrics
  • Diabetes
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Congenital birth defects

We consider the application of any person who is of legal driving age, 16-years-old or older.

How do you apply?

You will need your physician's referral and a valid Arizona driver's license or permit to apply for the Adapted Driving Program.

What happens next?

Evaluation - Once you're referred and accepted in the program, we assess  your physical needs and driving knowledge. We then conduct a two-step evaluation:

  • A clinical evaluation to help us determine your visual perception, reaction times, transfer skills and other driving skills for driving safely
  • A behind-the-wheel assessment to evaluate your driving skills in actual traffic

This "hands on" experience helps you understand your skills and limits and helps us select the equipment or vehicle modification right for you.

Training - The Banner Good Samaritan Rehabilitation Institute owns several vehicles adapted for "behind-the-wheel" driver evaluation and training. A Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist will train you with one of these vehicles. Specialists can also perform car and van evaluations.

Training is tailored to meet your individual needs and to cover all aspects of safe driving.

This includes:

  • Reviewing safe driving procedures and maneuvers
  • Increasing your endurance in traffic situations
  • Selecting appropriate adaptive equipment for your driving needs
  • Learning to maintain that equipment
  • Practicing emergency procedures and defensive driving

How long does the program last?

It depends entirely on your disability and previous driving experience.

How much does it cost?

Fees for the Adapted Driving Program are charged on an hourly rate. Because the program is managed by occupational therapists, some insurance companies will assist with costs. Staff can also suggest other funding sources.

What are the hours?

Appointments for evaluation or training are available between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The Adapted Driving Program is located at the Banner Good Samaritan Rehabilitation Institute, 1012 E. Willeta, Phoenix, AZ 85006. It's adjacent to Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center, 1111 E. McDowell Road.
