The diversity of our community is represented in our volunteers with the Banner Good Samaritan Service League, ranging from students, adults, retired individuals, winter visitors and those who work part-time and full-time jobs. This group donates nearly 50,000 hours to the hospital annually, including assistance with the care of patients and other imperative functions.
In addition to our volunteers' many hours of service, Banner Good Samaritan's Service League has raised and donated nearly $7 million since 1953 through various fundraising activities.
You don't need medical experience to be a Banner Good Samaritan Service League volunteer. Our goal is to match your interests with numerous opportunities at Banner Good Samaritan. Potential volunteers may choose from over 25 rewarding positions, including:
- Patient Care: Volunteers work in the Emergency department, Surgery departments, and Nursing units. An extension of the patient care staff, volunteers lend assistance by nurturing family and visitors when needed, providing assistance to the health care givers in any way that is needed.
- Gift Shop Volunteer: Assists customers with their needs in the Gift Shop, cashiers and stocks merchandise.
- Clerical Assistant: Provides clerical help in many departments in the hospital.
- Visitor Services: Provides information, directions and comfort at the hospital's main information desk or surgery/ICU waiting area.
- Dog Therapy: Volunteers and their therapy dogs make visits to patients.

"Banner Good Samaritan could not operate as effectively without the support of volunteers from throughout the community," said Kristina Proctor, Volunteer Services coordinator at Banner Good Samaritan. "These special people truly aid in the care and recovery of our patients."
Service from the Heart
Banner Good Samaritan volunteers represent all facets of our community. The rewards of volunteering are many:
- Volunteers may develop an interest in a medical profession.
- Volunteers gain work experience needed when applying for a job.
- Volunteers receive intangible rewards while contributing to patient care and recovery.
- Volunteers can make a difference and contribute to society by giving back to the community.
- Volunteers make lifelong friends.
The first time a volunteer holds a patient's hand, responds to a need, provides information or takes a therapy dog to visit, they know they've made a difference and understand their very important role in the healing process. According to research and our own experience, patients have greater confidence in their recovery when they know they are surrounded by caring people.
When can I Volunteer?
One of the best parts of volunteering with Banner Health System is the flexibility we offer in scheduling your volunteer time. We ask that volunteers donate at least four hours each week. Positions are available mornings, afternoons and evenings, seven days a week. We'll be glad to work with you to develop a schedule that meets your needs.
The Volunteer Services program also operates a very active Teen Volunteer program. The minimum age for teen volunteers is 14.
"During the school year we have approximately 30 teens volunteering after school and on weekends. During the summer months, our number reaches almost 100," Proctor added. She recommends that any teen wishing to become involved in the summer Teen Volunteer Program call no later than April in order to secure a place in the summer program.
The Service League is also expanding to new areas of the hospital. "People who visit Banner Good Sam may be familiar with our volunteers in the surgery waiting area," Proctor said. "We plan on expanding that program to our West Tower ambulatory care area and are looking at staffing the ICU's in the main tower."
