What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a mode of therapy in which the patient breathes 100 percent oxygen at pressures greater than atmospheric (sea level) pressure. This forces delivery of oxygen to the entire body at values two to three times greater than atmospheric pressure. In addition to providing oxygen support to starving tissues, HBO also:
- Causes the body to make new blood vessels
- Can impede flesh-eating bacteria
- Help save failing skin grafts and flaps
- Assist in rebuilding tissues and bone damaged from radiation
Following Medicare guidelines, this therapy is a safe and comfortable treatment for a variety of disorders. A certified hyperbaric oxygen physician is available at all times at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center for consultation and supervision.
