Cardiac Arrest Center

Hypothermia treatment at Banner Heart Hospital Hypothermia treatment is now part of the protocol for patients who have suffered cardiac arrest.

Banner Heart Hospital, the only heart hospital in the East Valley, is certified as a Cardiac Arrest Center by Arizona's Bureau of Emergency Medical Services and Trauma System.

The certification means the hospital meets state standards in caring for cardiac-arrest patients.

At the core of our treatment is a unique therapy: hypothermia.

  • When a cardiac-arrest patient remains comatose after the initial attack, we lower the patient's body temperature by using ice packs or other methods during the first few hours.
  • This can preserve the patient's neurological function while comatose.
  • The cold treatment is followed by a natural warming, where the body brings itself back to a normal temperature.
