Banner Heart Hospital also offers robotic thoracic/lung surgery, including lung biopsies and wedge resections, using the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System. This system translates the surgeon’s actions into precise movements with the surgical robot.

A lung biopsy removes a small piece of lung tissue which can be examined under a microscope. We perform wedge resections when a larger piece of lung tissue is needed for a diagnosis. These surgeries can help diagnose certain lung conditions, such as sarcoidosis or pulmonary fibrosis; diagnose suspected lung cancer; and evaluate any abnormalities seen on other tests, such as a chest X-ray or CT scan.
