Banner Heart Hospital recognizes the benefits of combining traditional therapy with the use of integrative therapies such as dog, humor, or Reiki therapy to enhance patient care.
Reiki (pronounced "ray-key") is a natural therapy that uses healing energy to balance, increase well-being, and to support healing.
How does it work?
Healing energy exists in the body, but is depleted when you're sick or stressed. Reiki helps to increase your healing energy supply. This increased flow of healing energy sets the stage for your body, mind and spirit to heal itself. Reiki does not promise specific results.
How much will it cost?
Reiki sessions are a volunteer service and are offered to Banner Heart Hospital patients and their families at no cost.
Who gives the Reiki session?
Sessions are conducted by a Reiki therapist who has proven completion of Reiki Level II or higher certification, and has also completed the Banner Heart Hospital volunteer orientation.
Where does Reiki fit in?
Reiki is a Complementary Therapy to aid in your recovery and rehabilitation. Complementary therapy is non-drug therapy. Other examples are massage, relaxation, and soothing music.
Sometimes a person is reluctant to try complementary therapy because of a mistaken idea that any level of success with the complementary therapy will result in pain medicine or regular procedures being decreased or withheld. Complementary therapies such as Reiki are to be used in addition to pain medications and regular procedures, not to replace them.
What are Reiki sessions like?
The patient remains in bed or can sit in a chair in their room or outpatient area. You will not be asked to remove any article of clothing or jewelry. The mini session lasts about 15-20 minutes. The therapist conducts all sessions hands off, working in the space about 6 inches above your body. All you need to do during a Reiki session is completely relax. The Reiki experience has been described by some as a warm, glowing radiance.
How has Reiki helped others?
A patient recovering from coronary artery bypass surgery wrote: "The Reiki session you gave me on the day before my surgery helped me to relax and get in the right frame of mind. Then the session you gave me in the hospital room following surgery helped me manage my pain with relaxation." The patient's wife wrote: "Thank you for giving me the gift of Reiki to help me stay calm so that I could focus on how to best support my husband."
