About Banner Poison Control Center
Every year more than 100,000 calls (nearly 20,000 involving young children) come into the Banner Poison Control Center Hotline and are answered by nurses specially trained in toxicology medicine. Backed by toxicology doctors, these nurses are able to successfully manage the vast majority of poison exposures in the home and prevent costly visits to Valley emergency centers. This includes nearly 13,000 calls from people who have been poisoned by bites and stings from desert critters like scorpions, black widow spiders, bees and rattlesnakes.
The Banner Poison Control Center is a United Way agency and was established in 1979 by the late Donald B. Kunkel, M.D. Serving all of Maricopa County and Central Arizona, the non-profit Poison Center relies on state funding, the United Way, grants from private agencies and donations from individuals and families.
