Recovery in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)

Immediately after your surgery, operating room staff will move you to the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU)

  • While you are in the PACU, nurses will monitor your breathing, blood pressure, heart rate and other vital signs until you are fully awake.
  • Your nurse will ask you to explain if you have pain, where it hurts and what it feels like. Please try to be honest and specific when describing your pain. Your nurse may ask you to describe how much you hurt based on a scale of 0 to 10.
    • 0 - No pain
    • 1-3 - Mild Pain
    • 4-5 - Moderate Pain
    • 6-9 - Sever to very severe pain
    • 10 - Excruciating pain
