Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

baby

Our 35-bed Level III neonatal unit provides intensive and intermediate care for babies of high risk pregnancies and those born prematurely.

The 17-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery (NICU) and 18-bed Continuing Care Nursery (CCN) at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center are state-of-the-art and incorporate the most recent research in developmental care such as use of indirect lighting, sound-absorbing building materials, and providing a private room design to promote infant/parent bonding for the sickest infants.

Board certified neonatologists and neonatal nurse practitioners lead the knowledgeable and compassionate multidisciplinary team of specialty nurses, therapists, pharmacists, dietitians and social workers to provide a customized plan of care for each baby and family in our care.   A full-time, developmental nurse is also available to provide hands-on support to families at the bedside, and provides small group discharge teaching classes for parents and caregivers.

To continually maintain the highest quality of patient care, the Level III NICU voluntarily participates in the Vermont Oxford Network (VON), an international consortium of Level II and Level III NICUs that benchmarks outcomes and shares data on the quality of neonatal care worldwide.
