MESA, Ariz (July 1, 2008) -- For Alexis and Nathaniel Ross of Mesa, Ariz., there is nothing more satisfying than pulling up to the front doors of Banner Children's Hospital at Banner Desert Medical Center.
Alexis and Nathaniel are not coming for treatment. They are not even sick. In fact, neither has been a patient at Banner Children's for some time.
They come regularly to Banner Children's to donate items that help the hospital's Child Life Department keep sick kids occupied, such as craft projects, items like colored paper and crayons for the Emergency Department and even toys, which help stock Andrea's Closet, a special area created to help children cope with hospitalization through special rewards.
Their most recent donation, on July 1, involved six computer paper boxes of crayons (more than 43,000 according to mom Tara's count), coloring books, Cabbage Patch dolls, puzzles and other crafts and games to appeal to all ages.
Collected during their last month at school, Alexis, age 9, and Nathaniel, age 6, held a competition to see whose class could collect the most toys. Nathaniel's first grade friends were quite the competitors, collecting 130 toys for the donation.
"I told them that we were in second place and being beat by the kindergartners," said Nathaniel. "That helped them want to bring in more toys." This is the second year Nathaniel won the competition. He is hoping for a repeat next year, a "turkey" according to the regular bowler.
This donation is the latest in a series of donations that Alexis and Nathaniel developed through their organization, Kids with Big Hearts. To learn more about Alexis and Nathaniel, visit kidswithbighearts.
