kids on bikesThe Electroneurodiagnostics Department at Cardon Children’s Medical Center offers testing for several pediatric neurological disorders.

Our staff works closely with our patients, their parents and physicians to provide quality testing in a friendly and professional environment.

Our Tests
Electroencephalogram (EEG)
EEGs help diagnose a number of neurological disorders, including seizure disorders, developmental delays, staring spells, syncope (fainting), involuntary movements and head trauma.

An EEG records electrical activity of the brain by placing electrodes on the scalp for approximately one and a half hours. Parents can hold and comfort the child during the test.

  • The child should arrive for the appointment sleep deprived so that he or she will be able to fall asleep during part of the test.
  • Hair should be clean and dry without any hair products such as hairspray or gel.
  • Avoid caffeine 24 hours prior to the test.
  • Infants should arrive for the appointment ready to take a bottle or to be nursed.
  • Bring a pacifier if one is used.
  • Bring the child’s blanket and or stuffed animal for comforting.
  • The child may bring a DVD, CD or book for comfort while the electrodes are being placed on the scalp.

Ambulatory EEG
An ambulatory EEG records brain activity for 24 to 72 hours, as requested by physician. Electrodes are attached to the patient’s scalp and a recording device is worn during the majority of everyday activities. Physical activities are restricted, along with any activity that causes perspiration. The initial appointment time is 90 minutes. The follow up appointment to remove the electrodes is approximately 30 minutes.

  • Hair should be clean and dry without any hair products such as hairspray or gel.
  • The child should wear a button down shirt so clothes can be changed easily. The child will not be allowed to shower or bath while connected to the recorder.
