Pre-Surgery Class and Tour

A nurse demonstrates taking a heart-beat on a young boy.

At Cardon Children's Medical Center, we know that surgery can be an unfamiliar experience for parents and children alike.

That is why we offer several resources to make your family comfortable and informed about what is going to happen before, during and after the surgery.

We offer an optional, free pre-op class and tour for children, siblings and parents to help prepare them for this experience.

  • VIDEO: Stephanie Offill, Child Life Specialist, has some tips for parents on how to make the surgical experience a positive one. Watch as a young child and her mom learn about what to expect on surgery day. YouTube video about preparing for surgery

This fun and informative class lets children know what to expect when they come to the hospital by touring the pre-op areas and watching a video about surgery. Children can also become more familiar with the medical supplies that will be used, such as the anesthesia mask.

The information is provided by our Child Life Specialists, trained professionals who use developmentally appropriate education and therapeutic play to help children understand and participate in their care. The information and activities are designed for children ages 3 to 12.
