St. John the Evangelist second graders donate afghan

Twenty two second-grade students from St. John the Evangelist Catholic School in Loveland made a special trip to McKee Cancer Center April 30 to deliver their class service project.

Throughout the school year, the students worked painstakingly to knit an afghan that could provide comfort to cancer patients. Their parents even joined in the effort, knitting an additional two afghans. Together, they presented all three to the McKee Cancer Center staff.

“We hope they bring prayers and love to the Cancer Center,” said Robin Martinek, the students’ teacher.

McKee Cancer Center oncologist Sam Shelanski, MD, told the students that many patients who come to the Cancer Center for treatment are afraid and they need a source of strength.

“These (afghans) clearly have so much hope and so many hugs in them,” Shelanski said. “More than one person can use them. Wrapping a patient in one of these afghans will make it easier for them. It will take some of the fear away. I know that the afghans are going to do that for a whole of patients here.”
