Banner iCare™ Intensive Care, Utilizing eICU Technology

NCMC's Banner iCare™ Intensive Care program is designed to provide the highest level of care for Intensive Care Unit patients through a partnership between bedside caregivers and remote intensive care specialists.

Linked to NCMC's ICU rooms via telemedicine, the eICU®, or Banner iCare system, pairs audiovisual and information technologies with intensive care physicians, or intensivists, back-up nurses and other caregivers at the bedside and help monitor ICU patient information 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Immediate Response
When intensivists detect a problem or concern, they can talk live to the caregivers at the bedside via voice and video and discuss treatment and interventions. This timely response can often result in shorter hospital stays with fewer complications for the patient. The intensivist is not a replacement for any caregivers at the hospital, rather an additional practitioner who has access to all the patient's vital signs, medical records, test results, X-rays, and other items found in the medical record.

A Virtual Doctor
Vital signs, patient information, laboratory data and X-rays from existing patient bedside monitoring devices are transmitted to an off-site Banner iCare facility in near real-time. To further enhance monitoring and communication, there also are video cameras and microphones in patient rooms allowing the Banner iCare team to see and speak directly to patients.

With the Banner iCare, intensivists are able to be virtually at the bedsides of dozens of patients in Banner Health's ICUs in Arizona and Colorado – the specialists however will be working from a remote command center. A key benefit of the Banner iCare system is the ability to pick up and trend nearly imperceptible changes in a patient's condition or vital signs. Because intensive care patients are so medically fragile, this early warning system can help head off life-threatening complications.

Patients or their representatives are informed about Banner iCare prior to admission and may opt out of eICU® monitoring – but most are in favor of the additional care.

Because of it's commitment to critical care patients, the ICU at North Colorado Medical Center has been named a recipient of the Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses.
