Approaching the Aircraft

  • Never approach the aircraft until the pilot or crew gives you the ok either by a hand wave or other signal.
  • Never approach from the rear of the aircraft, walk under the book or around the tail rotor.
  • Never approach as the helicopter is starting up or shutting down. The main rotor may dip reducing ground clearance.
  • Never run in the landing zone
  • Always approach and depart towards the front of the aircraft into the Safe Zone.
  • Always walk around the front of the aircraft to move from one side of the helicopter to the other. Never walk under the tail boom.

Always approach from the downhill side when on uneven terrain. The rotor blade will remain horizontal and the uphill side ground clearance will be reduced.

Special Rotor Hazards
The helicopter creates a strong wind and will blow dirt, debris and other items. remove all loose items such as hats or other clothing. Protect the patient appropriately.

  • Never go near the tail of the aircraft whether it is running or not!
  • Never chase items that are blown off.
  • Never carry objects over your head. The main rotor blade my dip as low as eight feet. Keep all object at waist level or lower.
  • Always turn your back to the rotor wash to protect your eyes and face.
  • Always be aware of the main rotor.
  • Always stay clear of the entire 100 ft. X 100 ft. landing zone when the helicopter approaches to land.
