Heart Diagnosis

heart care professionals at Ogallala

Ogallala Community Hospital offers a number of diagnostic heart tests which help physicians determine an accurate diagnosis. These tests include:

The non-invasive tests are conveniently located in the hospital. Ogallala staff will provide specific instruction at the time of scheduling and direction and assistance during the tests. Results are then interpreted and sent to your physician who will discuss the findings with you.

Adenosine or Lexiscan Stress Test with Nuclear Imaging
This test evaluates the blood supply to the heart muscle. Patients will receive a dose of a radioisotope through an IV and, after waiting for about 30-45 minutes, will have a nuclear medicine scan. After the scan, patients will be taken to the stress lab, electrodes will be placed on the chest to record an electrocardiogram (ECG), and a blood pressure cuff will be placed on the arm to monitor blood pressure. Patients are given a medication that dilates the arteries in the heart, increasing the blood flow.

During an echocardiogram, also called an echo, a technician uses a painless technique to send sound waves into the patient’s chest. This produces a moving picture of the heart and heart valves.

Electrocardiography (ECG)
Also called EKG, an electrocardiogram measures the electrical activity in a heartbeat. Patients can be hooked to electrodes or wear a heart monitor (a small box that weighs less than one pound). The monitoring devices send signals to a technician that observes the heart rate and rhythm.

Treadmill Stress Testing
Stress/exercise testing involves studying the heart while under maximum cardiac stress. It allows a technician to measure the heart's efficiency when subjected to predetermined exercise or cardiac medications. Patients may walk on a treadmill or lie still under a camera depending on how the physician wants to see their heart function.
