Free Lecture Provides Vital Information About Ovarian Cancer

GLENDALE, Ariz. (March, 20, 2013) – A just released study found only one-third of women with an ovarian cancer diagnosis in the U.S receive adequate care or treatments which could add extra time to their lives.

The University of California, Irvine report points to widespread, flaws in the care of women with this disease, which kills 15,000 a year in the United States. About 22,000 new cases are diagnosed annually and are discovered at an advanced stage and needing aggressive treatment.

Banner Thunderbird proudly offers excellence in both care and treatment for women facing this deadly disease. Gynecological Oncologist Dr. Shana Wingo is one of fewer than1,500 gynecologic oncologists in the United States who specifically treat cervical, endometrial, ovarian, uterine and vulvar cancer. Dr. Wingo, will present a free community lecture on ovarian cancer at 6 p.m. on May 14 at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center.

Dr. Wingo, a board-certified gynecological oncologist on staff at Banner Thunderbird, will discuss symptoms, diagnosis and treatment options for ovarian cancer, including how robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery is being used to treat ovarian cancer. Robotic-assisted surgery uses robotic arms that translate the surgeon's hand motions into finer and more precise movements. Dr. Wingo is trained and certified to perform this type of minimally-invasive surgery.

Check-in for the event will take place between 5:30 and 6 p.m. To register for the event, call 602-230-CARE.

Ovarian cancer is diagnosed most often in women over age 50 but can occur in younger women too. The most decorated US gymnast (male or female) Shannon Miller announced her miracle pregnancy earlier this year after surviving ovarian cancer and undergoing years of treatment. She soared, vaulted and tumbled into gymnastics history in the Olympics 1992 and 1996, winning seven overall medals and all of our hearts.

Banner Thunderbird is located at 5555 W. Thunderbird Road in Glendale. The lecture will take place in the lower level of the hospital in Conference Room 6. Refreshments will be served.
