Gastroenterology Fellowship
This combined program is located at Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center in Phoenix, Ariz., in close relationship with the Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center. Three positions are available each year.
The three-year program consists of basic training in:
- gastroenterology
- hepatology
- nutrition
- pediatric gastroenterology
- therapeutic gastrointestinal endoscopy.
The faculty includes seven full-time gastroenterologists at this medical center, and seven part-time consulting gastroenterologists from the community.
While we stress clinical gastroenterology, the fellows take part in clinical research. Our facilities are up-to-date and include state-of-the-art video endoscopy units including endoscopic ultrasound. The motility lab has the most recent computerized motility and pH equipment. Also, computers are used in our section to record our data and other information by both staff and fellows.
The teaching program includes training in:
- clinical nutrition
- radiology and imaging techniques
- nuclear medicine
- pathology
- hepatology, including a rotation in pediatric gastroenterology.
During the first and second year, trainees also spend time in liver transplant center. Our program is well-organized and closely supervised to provide the maximum learning experience for the fellow.
We have also incorporated the Phoenix Indian Medical Center into our program and this rotation adds to the clinical experience. Overall, majority of the time is spent at the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center and the Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center.
