Welcome to the Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) website for Banner Health.
The program is accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE)*. According to ACPE guidelines, one unit of CPE credit requires a 400 hour commitment: Including 100 hours of group education, plus a minimum of 300 hours practical/clinical experience ministering to others in the hospital setting.
For 30 years, Banner Health’s CPE program has trained seminary students, clergy, lay people and nurses to listen and support the spiritual needs of people in their care. We offer training in a culturally diverse community with unique opportunities for interfaith exposure.
The Banner name, history, and non-profit mission testify that we recognize the importance of spiritual healing. In today’s world of high-tech medicine, remembering the spirit takes purposeful effort, and this is the mission of the chaplains who make up the system’s Departments of Spiritual Care.
Rev. Kelli Shepard, Director of Banner Good Samaritan’s Department of Spiritual Care shares, “In holistic care, we try to take care of the body, mind, and the spirit. We are the department to help you take care of your spirit and what is happening. For some people it’s having somebody to talk to; perhaps they can’t talk to their family, perhaps they can’t talk to friends or they’re not sure what they need to say. We’re a listening ear and will help sound back to you what it is that we hear you saying, what you think you need, and what resources you may want to meet those needs.”
Simply put, CPE helps equip spiritual healers and Banner Health supports a growing ACPE program because we know that healing involves more than medical cures.
The Banner Health System offers several learning options for professional and non-professional religious and spiritual leaders to take CPE:
- Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center
- Banner Estrella (a placement site for one extended student)
- Banner Thunderbird Medical Center
* BGSMC and its satellites are accredited to offer Level 1, Level 2, and Supervisory CPE
