Family Medicine during Intern Year
We are most pleased to offer two months of Family Medicine during the intern year: one inpatient and one outpatient. Our inpatient Family Medicine service includes adults, pediatrics, and newborns, working on a team made up by an intern, a second year, and a third year as supervisor. Night call is covered by second- and third-year residents, so interns get a break from call this month.
The ambulatory rotation involves seeing patients in the busy Family Medicine Center. Additional programs this month include a weekly session at our adopted elementary school, giving health talks on everything from nutrition to tobacco to HIV. Residents also help staff the Wesley Clinic, our monthly podiatry clinic, and help review charts for quality studies. Added bonus: this is also a call-free month!

Junior Faculty
A truly unique opportunity, this is a one-person fourth-year position which allows you to walk in the shoes of a faculty member. Duties include supervising hospital rounds, seeing your own panel of patients, precepting in the clinic, and giving noon lectures. Additionally, you will take the Faculty Development Fellowship offered by the University of Arizona, during which you will design a personal project. You will be sponsored to attend the spring session of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM). A number of graduates of our Junior Faculty program, and even graduates before this program began, hold teaching positions in family medicine.

Special Focus Curricula
We are very excited to have organized our usual flexible programming into a set of focused suggestions for those who have certain careers in mind. These are not requirements, but suggested selected rotations and learning opportunities which are most likely to prepare you for your career choice. We have carefully put together possible curricula for sports medicine, rural practice, underserved practice, obstetrics, and teaching/faculty. If there is another arena that interests you, we will help you design the best schedule to support your idea.

Sports Medicine Focus
We have a strong history of preparing residents well for careers in sports medicine. To date, all our residents seeking sports medicine fellowships have been accepted into top programs upon graduation.
Suggested curricula options:
- Sports medicine rotation at Arizona State University
- Sports medicine rotation at Dr. Yacobucci's office
- Arrange "away" rotation at a sports medicine training site before applying to that fellowship
- Project month (1 or 2) involving appropriate topic
- High school team doctor:
- Ironwood High School
- Central High School
- Stadium volunteer doctor:
- Cardinals football games
- ASU football games
- Noon lectures involving appropriate topics
- Rock 'N Roll Marathon: sponsor health tent
- Special Olympic Physicals
Rural Focus
Residents take one rural month during the third year.
Good Sam is proud of preparing graduates for rural practice in many parts of the country and the world. As desired, this can be combined with studies in advanced obstetrics as well. This can also be tailored toward an international focus.
Suggested additional curricula
(residents are invited to select among the following available rotations)
- Additional months at rural sites during each of the second or third years: Multiple sites we have cultivated include the emergency room in Show Low, Ariz., the clinic at the Grand Canyon, select Indian Health Service (IHS) sites, practices in the small towns of Williams and Snowflake, Ariz. – to name a few
- One month of neonatal ICU
- Additional surgery and/or trauma
- Additional ICU and/or anesthesiology
- ACLS / ATLS / PALS / NRP / ALSO certification
Obstetrics Focus
Residents perform a high volume of low-risk deliveries during the intern rotations
The strong obstetrical experience available at Banner Good Samaritan makes our residents very comfortable dealing with moms and babies. Graduates can be well-prepared to provide full prenatal and delivery services.
Suggested additional curricula:

- Up to 3 more months of advanced obstetrics, including Phoenix Perinatal Associates for high risk
- NICU
- Additional rotation at County intermediate nursery
- Additional rotation at Mountain Park obstetrics
- Genetics
- Additional labor & delivery call with compensated daytimes
- IHS (Indian Health Services) site with dedicated obstetrics
- C-section first-assisting, by arrangement
Underserved Focus
We are proud of our commitment to caring for the underserved community, both in our own neighborhood and the greater communities of the nation and the planet. This can also be tailored to an international interest, or combined with elements of the rural focus.
Suggested curricula:
- Clinica Adelante, outpatient clinic
- Centro de Salud (Wesley Center), outpatient care for women & families
- Homeless shelter
- Rotations in Belize, Africa, or Dominican Republic
- Selected IHS (Indian Health Service) sites
- Medical Spanish classes
Teaching/Faculty Focus
Banner Good Samaritan has launched many residents into a career in teaching. We have the unique fourth year position of Junior Faculty available; many who have held this position have moved on to become family medicine faculty.
Suggested curricula:
- 1 or 2 project months each year during the second and third years
- Third-year chief position
- Additional time working with medical students
- Faculty Development Fellowship during the third year (offered by the University of Arizona–may require additional funds)
- Manage journal clubs, M&M
- Additional presentations and/or scholarly work
- Consider applying for Junior Faculty position
