Training Sites

Family Medicine Residency Training SitesOur residents' core experience of caring for patients and their families across all life experiences happens in the Family Medicine Center. The Center is a large, well-equipped office close to the Medical Center. The office has 22 examination rooms, dedicated rooms for surgery, colposcopy,  casting, and family counseling. We have two conference rooms, and a complete lab. Residents have their own desks, PDAs, computers for literature searches, and wireless internet access.  We are "live" with our top-of-the-line electronic health records and wireless laptops as of 2007.

The Family Medicine Center is a busy primary care office with more than 25,000 patient encounters yearly. It has a support staff of 25 which includes RNs, LPNs, two psychology graduate student interns and a Social Worker. We care for patients from a broad spectrum of cultural and socioeconomic diversity.

The Family Medicine Center has a reputation as a learning environment that is friendly to residents and medical students. Faculty members prefer to see themselves as mentors or coaches rather than "professors." We are committed to making decisions with, not about, our residents. We welcome residents' ideas and questions and we strive to create a nurturing working environment for everyone who is part of our program. Residents sit as voting members on all governance committees.

Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center

Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center is the largest hospital in the Southwest. It is a private, nonprofit referral center and a Level One trauma center with a long history of involvement with medical education. It has residencies in many other specialties, all of which are rotation sites for our residents. It has well-established ties to the University of Arizona College of Medicine and is one of the most requested sites for medica- student education.

Banner Good Samaritan is the largest of eight hospitals within Banner Health's Phoenix area market, which also includes Banner Baywood Medical Center, Banner Behavioral Health Hospital-Scottsdale, Banner Desert Medical Center, Banner Estrella Medical Center, Banner Gateway Medical Center, Banner Heart Hospital and Banner Thunderbird Medical Center. Banner Good Samaritan also operates a rehabilitation center and hosts the Banner Alzheimer's Institute and Banner Poison Control Center.

Rotations are also offered at:

Phoenix Children’s Hospital
We are proud to be the only family medicine residency in Phoenix with admitting privileges at Phoenix Children's Hospital, a beautiful state-of-the art hospital just five minutes from Banner Good Samaritan. For years Phoenix Children’s Hospital was contained within Banner Good Sam, then in 2002 Phoenix Children's designed and built a free-standing facility in our neighborhood. The Phoenix Children's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit remains at Banner Good Sam and cares for about 1,500 newborns each year, one of the largest such units in the country. We are proud to include Phoenix Children's Hospital as one of our pediatric training sites.

Maricopa Medical Center
Also close to Banner Good Samaritan, our residents spend two months here in pediatric training during the second year. Maricopa Medical Center's active NICU and Pediatric Emergency Department (more than 20,000 patients yearly) provide great experience and give us great skills in managing a wide range of newborn and pediatric conditions. Our ophthalmology rotation is centered here, too, and has consistently been voted one of the best-taught rotations we have. Maricopa Medical Center is also renowned for the only burn center in the state, the Arizona Burn Center, which is among the top 10 burn centers in volume in the country. Maricopa Medical Center is a short 10 minute drive from Banner Good Sam.

Carl T. Hayden Veterans’ Hospital
Just 10 minutes from Banner Good Samaritan, this active VA hospital has a busy Internal Medicine service and ICU. Both Banner Good Sam’s Internal Medicine residents and Family Medicine residents care for patients here. The VA is enhanced by its electronic medical records, large geriatric program, and its post-traumatic stress disorder program.
