Residents who complete a combined Medicine/Pediatrics training program receive in-depth training in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. They provide care for patients in intensive care units, on hospital wards, and in the outpatient setting. The variety afforded by training in two fields of medicine and the ability to care for people of all ages make training in a combined program uniquely challenging and rewarding.

This particular combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Program has been in existence since 1984. The program is founded upon the solid, academic, fully accredited Internal Medicine Residency Training Program and the Phoenix Pediatrics Residency Training Program. The Internal Medicine Program is an integrated program of Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center and the Phoenix Veteran Affairs Medical Center. The Pediatric training program is integrated with Phoenix Children's Hospital and the Maricopa Medical Center. Both programs are affiliated with the University of Arizona College of Medicine and provide clinical clerkships for the medical students enrolled in the University. Each resident in the combined program will have a diverse combination of clinical experiences at these four clinical sites during their residency training.

Ambulatory clinical opportunities available for the residents are also diverse. Residents can elect to participate in a variety of subspecialty clinic sites, including a specialty clinic for HIV; Sports Medicine at Arizona State University; a primary-care pediatric experience for children at inner-city elementary schools; and an Adolescent Medicine clinic.

The longitudinal continuity clinic experience is also unique. Residents in the combined program will have their own clinic once weekly. During the first two years of residency training, this is provided in the Internal Medicine and Pediatric clinics on the Banner Good Samaritan Samaritan campus. Residents then have the opportunity to choose a combined Medicine/Pediatrics practice in the community, and work under the supervision of one of the Medicine/Pediatrics teaching faculty. Working with physicians in their practices is a great experience for the residents, not only with regard to the variety and number of patients they see, but also for what they learn about managing a combined practice.

Residents in the combined program enjoy the diversity of clinical experiences, and a well-balanced curriculum, which is flexible enough to meet an individual resident's priorities for training.
