Dr. Mattox graduated from the University of Colorado School of Medicine and brings 30 years of experience and commitment to medical education to the department. In addition to his being the Executive Director, Arizona Reproductive Medicine Specialists and his directorship of the residency program, he currently holds a clinical professorship in obstetrics, gynecology and community medicine at the University of Arizona.

Dr. Mattox is an adjunct professor of zoology at Arizona State University. He is a former examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a former member of the Residency Review Committee (RRC) and the former Region 5 CREOG Council Representative. Dr. Mattox joined BGSMC in 1990 from the University of Rochester where he was the Associate Chair and Division Director.

Dr. Mattox's scholarly contributions include more than 125 scientific articles, abstracts, poster presentations, editorial comments, and book chapters; he has given 450 regional, national and international presentations. His most recent textbook, "Core Textbook of Obstetrics and Gynecology" was published by Mosby, 1998. In 1996 he received the APGO Excellence in Teaching Award. The Department was selected as the "Best Teaching Department", April 1999, by the University of Arizona, Phoenix Campus, medical students. The CREOG national faculty award was given to Dr. Mattox in 1999. He also has been voted "Top Doc" in Phoenix, 1995, 1998, 2001,2005, 2006 and 2007.  He was listed as Top OB/GYN in the United States in 2006 and 2007.
