An "education-first" philosophy has long been established and adhered to by voluntary faculty and house officers alike within the Phoenix Integrated Surgical Residency. As such, all residents (except, of course, those assigned to the Alaska Native Medical Center) are able to attend the following morning conferences, held at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center:

  • Mondays:
    • (A) Selected Readings (PGY-2 through PGY-5 residents)
    • (B) Fundamentals in Surgery (PGY-1 residents)
  • Thursdays:
    • Grand Rounds
  • Fridays:
    • Basic Sciences Conference

Additionally, institution-specific Morbidity & Mortality conferences are held on Tuesdays (Veterans Hospital) and Wednesdays (Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center). There are as well a variety of specialty-based conferences that you will be able to attend while assigned to that specific rotation.  These include, but are hardly limited to:

  • Trauma/ICU Rounds (Mondays at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center)
  • Vascular Conferences (Mondays at Veterans Hospital)
  • Trauma/ICU Conference (Wednesdays at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center)
  • General Surgery Case Presentations Conference (Wednesdays at the Veterans Hospital)
  • Vascular Journal Club (second Thursday of the month at Banner Good Samaritan)
  • Multi-Disciplinary Conference (Fridays at Veterans Hospital)

Finally, through curricula offered at the 3000 square-foot Banner Simulation Education Center, our house officers have access to cutting-edge simulation technology to hone their skills in a variety of clinical scenarios, including trauma care, patient arrests, and minimal access surgical procedures.
