 Selection Criteria & Processes

We only review application materials submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). ERAS applications that contain at minimum, the following materials, will be accepted through November 14th, 2007: personal statement; curriculum vita; letters of reference from members of the surgery family; medical school transcripts; and, an official copy of the USMLE Part 1 performance record. While USMLE Part II (Clinical knowledge) scores are not required to compelte your application, it is our firm belief that this examination best reflects the kind of problem solving skills we seek in our house officers.  At the time of the application review, the content will be evaluated within the context of what this program is looking for among its trainees – well-grounded women and men who demonstrate a broad and deep medical knowledge data base, an aptitude for deciphering surgical disease states, and an unflagging work ethic founded on the team approach to actively learning and delivering professional, empathetic patient care.

Qualified applicants will be offered the opportunity of a personal interview, the completion of which is an absolute requirement before we will list that applicant on the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Only those applicants who will be offered an interview opportunity will be contacted, by the primary e-mail address offered on the ERAS application. Additional information as to the interview process will be included in that mailing. Basically, each interview begins with an evening gathering with some of our house officers, followed the next day by a series of informational and interview sessions with the program director, teaching faculty, and house officers. Please understand that only a limited number of personal interviews are granted on a first-come first-served basis.

Finally, please understand that we accept all applicants ONLY through the NRMP, the rules by which we abide.
